Day +130 Home

On Wednesday, the pathology report from Alek’s colonoscopy came back and the results pointed to GVH, not Crohn’s. Alek’s BMT doctor was not convinced, but continued to consult with the GI team, pathologists, other ALD specialists and the GVH specialist. The conclusion they came to is that it is NOT GVH, it could still be Crohn’s in the early stages, but they believe it is actually colitis as a result of transplant. So Alek will be starting a 2 week course of flagyl, an antibiotic, in hopes that this will treat the colitis. Please pray with us that this is indeed what has been causing Alek’s GI issues and it will resolved!

Alek was also given the okay to go mask free outside! He is now allowed to go to the zoo, the store, and other public places. He will still have to wear a mask in these settings due to the higher risk for infection and we will need to go during low-traffic times. The smile on his face when he found this out was priceless!

The best news we received yesterday is an official “home” day… we will have one more clinic appointment Monday morning and will be able to leave afterwards! Alek is counting down the days, as are Coehen and Sylas! We are so ready to be a family together under one roof!

Alek’s BMT doctor is working with his home team to make sure we are able to be seen next week to continue his care. We will likely be traveling to Toledo multiple times a week for appointments to start. His team will consist of a neurologist, endocrinologist, oncologist, gastroenterologist, and dietitian. He will also continue receiving PT and OT, and possibly ST. He is coming home with his Hickman line still in place so he can continue getting TPN; his G-tube in hopes we can transition to enteral feedings until he is eating enough by mouth to maintain a healthy diet.

While Alek and I are ready to be home and excited to make the transition, it is still a little bittersweet. We have made so many friends here at RMH who feel more like family than acquaintances. We had to say goodbye to one family this morning because they are headed home today! We are so thankful for these families and the bonds we have made. They have been a light during this time; God knew who to place in our path to help us through this portion of our journey.
