Our visit to Minnesota last week was good overall. Alek’s immune system is in a good spot, good enough to start school – with precaution! While I am thrilled with this news, Alek is a little less excited. He would rather stay home than go to school, but I think once he gets back he will be glad he is going.
On Monday, Alek had an MRI of his brain. While the preliminary results looked good, after further review there was an area that caused his transplant doctor to request we return in 1-2 months. There was a mild enhancement in the back of his brain that is not in a typical area (however, nothing about Alek’s presentation has been “typical”).
On Tuesday, Alek was treated to a Minnesota Twins game (they played the Tigers) with Grandpa Frank, MeMe and Pooker (and mom of course). He enjoyed the first few innings and then became bored quickly. However, he enjoyed seeing a home run by the Tigers and a grand slam by the Twins. He hung on until the end of the 8th inning before we decided to head out as the Twins were up.
Wednesday we met with the endocrinologist – everything is looking good from his standpoint. The only thing he warned us about was Alek overeating. We are so glad that he wants to eat, but we will have to make sure he is eating in moderation.
Thursday was Alek’s least favorite day – neuropsych testing. These assessments are challenging and Alek can become very frustrated very quickly resulting in him shutting down. But with some encouragement and some time with Jersey the therapy dog, he was able to complete everything and then some! He was treated to a visit to the Como Zoo where we saw the animal he was hoping he would see – a sloth! And it was moving!!
Friday was the best day of Alek’s life – so he says! He had an MRE of his GI, with results showing everything is normal. While this is great news, it does not help us to understand why he is bleeding and in so much pain, or be able to treat. The best part was the removal of Alek’s central line and his G-tube! He is thrilled to be free of these accessories and be able to do more wrestling with his brothers!
We continue to praise the Lord for his goodness and His healing. We know he is with Alek and that because of this we do not need to worry (easier said than done at times)! I have felt my anxiety come on when I think about this abnormal enhancement that was seen on the MRI and what it means for Alek, but then I remember that it doesn’t matter how much I worry or think about it or let the anxiety overwhelm me, He is in control and knows exactly what Alek needs. I ask that you would continue to pray for absolute healing in Alek, that this “spot” would be nothing and that we can begin to breathe again. I also ask that you would pray for this transition back to school for Alek. He has missed practically a year of school and going back is going to come with many challenges, but also many more chances to shine!
We hope to see you all on September 8 at Fairview Elementary for Touch a Truck!!!
