Our Story
Bexley was diagnosed with a rare liver disease when she was just two years old. After visiting three hospitals including UNC-Chapel Hill and Cincinnati Children’s and after countless tests, imaging and biopsies, it was determined she had Congenital Hepatic Fibrosis and portal hypertension. In December of 2023 a mass was found in the right lobe of her liver. In April she had two internal bleeding episodes within two weeks of each other as a result of varices caused by her portal hypertension. After the second bleed UNC tried to band the area but during the procedure she had a life-threatening bleed resulting in multiple blood and platelet transfusions. They got her stable and told us we were being transported to Duke and that she needed a liver transplant. During our three-week stay at Duke they were able to stabilize her while they did their transplant evaluation. All the doctors agreed that because of Bexley’s severe cirrhosis, the nodules in her liver, her portal hypertension and her history of internal bleeding a liver transplant is her best treatment option.
Our oldest daughter Selah is a type 1 diabetic so we already have so many medical expenses. That is why we have chosen to partner with COTA to help raise money to assist with transplant-related expenses including the lifelong medications and treatment she will need.
We appreciate your prayers, love, and contributions to COTA for Bex.
The Children’s Organ Transplant Association (COTA) helps children and young adults who need a life-saving transplant by providing fundraising assistance and family support. COTA is the nation’s only fundraising organization solely dedicated to raising life-saving dollars in honor of transplant-needy children and young adults. 100% of each contribution made to COTA in honor of our patients helps meet transplant-related expenses. COTA’s services are free to our families, and gifts to COTA are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law.
