8/31/21 update from Elliot’s parents

Elliot had a wonderful summer and is excited to start first grade after a full year of virtual kindergarten. Mom and dad are anxious about having him in school while the delta variant is running rampant, but thankful that the Chicago school system is taking all the necessary safety precautions including weekly COVID-19 testing, installing HEPA filters, mask wearing, and sitting behind safety shields during meals. We are checking the news daily to see when vaccines will be available for school-aged children and looking forward to safer and brighter days ahead. Covid is very isolating for families with increased medical needs.

We are grateful for our support and community and thrilled that we have managed to fundraise over $75K for COTA in a few months. There is no fair price for the health of a child, but it is mind boggling how medical expenses can add up in a lifetime. We are expecting Elliot’s medical care to amount to around $400K-$2M in his life. Additionally, we are not legally allowed to pay for his donor’s transplant-related medical and travel expenses. We are incredibly grateful for COTA for helping us bridge that gap. COTA funds will make it possible for our donor to be legally reimbursed for any incurred expenses and also give Elliot some financial security.

Thank you for being a part of our journey!
