Our Journey to Hope: Navigating the Transplant Evaluation Process

After the disappointment of a failed procedure, our journey towards hope led us to the Solid Organ Transplant Center at Dallas Children’s Medical Center. From the outset, the transplant coordinator’s support was nothing short of amazing. Understanding our situation, they efficiently scheduled our evaluations over a week, a process usually spread over several weeks or months.

The evaluation process for transplant candidates is exhaustive, involving meetings with every member of the transplant team, alongside various tests like bloodwork, ultrasounds, X-rays, and echocardiograms. Despite the condensed timeline, the meticulous scheduling meant we had to endure some waiting before our evaluations commenced.

Our trip to Dallas in September 2022 meant five days of intense testing and consultations, all made easier by the comforting embrace of the Ronald McDonald House. At the evaluation’s conclusion, the transplant team deliberated over Emma’s case, leaving us on edge for a nerve-wracking week.

Finally, the call came, confirming Emma’s approval pending a few final steps. Negotiating insurance approvals and ensuring Emma received necessary vaccines became the immediate focus. And after completing these crucial steps, in November 2022, Emma was officially listed for UNOS transplant. This journey, though fraught with uncertainties, has been a testament to resilience and the power of hope. Each step forward brings us closer to the possibility of a brighter tomorrow for Emma. And with each hurdle overcome, our faith in the journey ahead only grows stronger.
