Our Story

Jacob David Leiter was born on September 22, 2020 at Inova Children’s Hospital in Fairfax, VA. Prior to his birth, Jacob was diagnosed with bi-lateral kidney hydronephrosis. His parents, Jeremiah and Christen Leiter immediately began planning for the best possible medical care for Jacob. They sought out the care of Pediatric Specialists of Virginia to give him the best chance for a healthy life.

At birth, Jacob was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease and was immediately admitted to the NICU. While in the NICU, Jacob’s doctors worked diligently to manage and stabilize his condition so that he could go home to his family. After 3 weeks in the NICU, Jacob was able to go home with his parents to Shepherdstown, WV.

Jacob has recently been accepted for a kidney transplant at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, PA and the medical team is continuing to monitor his condition as we get closer to transplant. Jacob’s parents manage his day-to-day care and take him to regular appointments with his team of doctors.

Jacob is a happy and active toddler who loves to smile and laugh. He loves to play outside, listen to music and watch his favorite shows. He is a fighter and is determined to beat this disease. Jacob’s story is one of strength and resilience in the face of a life-threatening illness. With the help of his family, doctors and supporters, Jacob is fighting every day to live a healthy, happy life.

Jacob’s parents have created this fundraising page to help cover the costs associated with his transplant and post-transplant care. Any donations are greatly appreciated and will go directly to helping Jacob and his family. Thank you for your support!

The Children’s Organ Transplant Association (COTA) helps children and young adults who need a life-saving transplant by providing fundraising assistance and family support. COTA is the nation’s only fundraising organization solely dedicated to raising life-saving dollars in honor of transplant-needy children and young adults. 100% of each contribution made to COTA in honor of our patients helps meet transplant-related expenses. COTA’s services are free to our families, and gifts to COTA are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law.
