Kiran Update: Lung Surgery Next Week

We have a little less than a week to go until Kiran’s lung surgery on Wednesday, January 26th. Thank you to everyone that attended the virtual Rosary and prayer session before the original surgery date in the beginning of January. The transplant and surgery team decided the morning we were supposed to leave for Cincinnati to delay surgery. Kiran was still recovering from a stomach bug, had lost of a lot of weight, and labs weren’t looking great. Now things are much better so fingers crossed everyone stays healthy!

As some of you might remember, Kiran was born with a mass called a CPAM (congenital pulmonary airway malformation) in his right lung.  While it has not caused any problems yet, if he contracts any sort of upper respiratory infection (i.e. a cold), the infection could, more or less, get “trapped” in the cpam mass.  This will really be scary after transplant when he is on immunosuppressant medications to keep his body from rejecting the donor kidney. In addition, the masses sometimes turn to cancer later in life. All of this to say, it has to be removed before kidney transplant.

The cpam is in the upper of three lobes. However, the upper lobe is unfortunately fused with the middle lobe. So in addition to the upper lobe being removed, the pediatric surgeon will decide whether he is able to just take out a portion of the middle lobe or will have to take out the entire middle lobe. We’re obviously praying for Kiran to lose as little lung tissue as possible, but Dr. Lim (the surgeon) won’t know until he is in Kiran’s lung.  While some cpam’s are able to be remove with tiny incisions (laparoscopically), because of where Kiran’s is located Dr. Lim will have to make a large incision and move Kiran’s ribs to access the lung.

It’s a big deal to remove a portion of his lung, and especially nerve-wracking to do this during this (respiratory virus!) pandemic. Kiran will likely be at Cincinnati Children’s for about two weeks, barring any complications.

We will be having a virtual prayer meeting the evening before Kiran’s surgery. Look for a post in the next few days about this opportunity to pray with Kiran’s family before the big day. We hope you will join us. Finally, thank you to everyone who has supported us on this journey. We could not do this without you.

Hugs and kidneys (and lungs),

  1. Elizabeth C posted about your request. Sending prayers for Kiran and the surgical team, for everything to go smoothly and for his quick recovery. Also for peace for you. God bless!

  2. Praying from Atchison, KS for little Kiran, especially during his surgery. May God grant you His PEACE and JOY despite this incredible suffering. Jesus, I trust in you!

  3. You don’t know me, but I have been praying for you and your son, and I will keep doing so. I’m asking my family and friends to join me, too, so you have a lot of people you probably do not know praying for you. Just one more way the family of God can truly act like one despite distance…anything really. I also ant to include my favorite prayer hoping it is as much a comfort and encouragement to you as it has been to me over the years. God bless you and your little man! The everlasting God has in His wisdom foreseen from eternity
the cross that He now presents to you as a gift from His inmost heart.
This cross He now sends you
He has considered with His all-knowing eyes,
    understood with His Divine mind,
    tested with His wise justice,
    warmed with loving arms
and weighed with His own hands
to see that it be not one inch too large
and not one ounce too heavy for you.
He has blessed it with His holy Name,
    anointed it with His consolation,
taken one last glance at you and your courage,
and then sent it to you from heaven,
a special greeting from God to you,
an alms of the all-merciful love of God.
    St. Francis de Sales

  4. Hello!
God bless your little boy! May he have a successful surgery and recovery without any complications or infections. I’m sorry that he has to go through this trial and that your family has to be on pins and needles during the surgery. But our good and loving Lord, is the giver of life! And He will bless and protect little Kiran through this trial. May His Holy saints and angels surround Kiran during his surgery and recovery. Amen!
