Monday at 5 PM we received the call of a heart being available. We were getting ready to go when they told us to pump our brakes and come in the next evening as they were procuring the donor’s other organ’s. The cardiologist said it was the perfect heart for her (whatever that means).
We arrived at Children’s Hospital 3 PM Tuesday and went in for surgery 8:30 AM Wednesday. Five hours of holding our breath was the most difficult time of my life!! Leading into the surgery and during, you just don’t know if you’ll see her again frankly; nerve racking!! The implant was a success and the next 48-72 hours were expected to be a roller coaster.
That night Lily woke ahead of schedule and had her breathing tube removed. In three days, she went from being connected from 13 machines to zero. Today, Lily was moved out of the ICU and into a much more comfortable space.
The road to recovery is looking positive but the poor thing has been through so much. It’s been traumatic, but better days are ahead. A wide range of emotions the last few days but we’re seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. Lily is one tough cookie and Jenny Palan has been a rockstar mom; both are inspiring.
