Our Story
On 10/15/19, Baby Lucas (9mo) was diagnosed with infant restrictive cardiomyopathy (RCM) – an extremely rare heart disease. There are no current management options or cure for RCM, and Lucas needs a heart transplant.
Shortly after diagnosis, Lucas, his parents Corey and Andrew, along with his big sister, Addy, left their home in Vancouver, WA and relocated to Seattle Children’s Hospital. Lucas remained inpatient for 4.5 months, when the family was able to move into an apartment near the hospital. After 3 months in an apartment , they were able to take Lucas back home returning every few weeks for clinic visits. They enjoyed 5 months at home before needing to return on 11/9/20. Lucas is now listed 1A (highest priority), and will remain inpatient until he gets his perfect heart.
After a sucessful heart transplant operation and recovery, Lucas will require a strictly timed daily medication regimen for the rest of his life, as well as future hospital visits and operations – both anticipated and potentially unanticipated. To help cover the costs of Lucas’ current and future transplant-related expenses, the family is working with COTA.
The Children’s Organ Transplant Association (COTA) helps children and young adults who need a life-saving transplant by providing fundraising assistance and family support. COTA is the nation’s only fundraising organization solely dedicated to raising life-saving dollars in honor of transplant-needy children and young adults. 100% of each contribution made to COTA in honor of our patients helps meet transplant-related expenses. COTA’s services are free to our families, and gifts to COTA are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law.
