A Lot To Be Thankful For!

Macy had a really good and uneventful night here in the PICU with good pain control and we woke up to lots of great news! Her morning kidney ultrasound looked great and all of her kidney numbers are much improved and trending in the right direction. Her kidney function is almost normal and the protein in her urine is much lower and moving closer to normal! Her urine output has also normalized. We weren’t really sure what to expect after yesterday and I would say this is the best case scenario. Her team is extremely pleased.

We are still in the PICU while they work to get her blood thinner (Heparin) to a therapeutic dose and ensure things continue in the right direction. She’s receiving many medications including high dose IV steroids, antithymocyte globulins (ATG), tacrolimus and cellcept to suppress her immune system from recognizing Erin’s kidney. And because her immune system will be extra suppressed we have added several antibiotics and antivirals to help prevent infection. She also received some iv calcium and magnesium earlier today.

Macy was pretty groggy most of the morning, but was able to get out of bed and sit in a chair for several hours this afternoon as well as eat a little bit.

Erin was feeling much improved this morning and was discharged from the hospital this afternoon and we pray she can rest comfortably at home as she heals. We are so incredibly grateful for Erin and her family for the amazing gift and sacrifices they have made to give Macy an improved life!

We will continue to pray for a smooth road for Macy and that the new kidney gets nice and comfy in her left abdomen. Things we are still monitoring include keeping her blood pressure on the higher level, her anticoagulation levels, the amount of blood and protein leaking into her urine, the amount of blood in the drain in her abdomen, her hemoglobin levels, electrolytes and renal function levels. We are feeling very, very, very thankful to be where we are!!!
