Better Day

Nora had a much better day today. Right away this morning she was sitting up flirting and smiling with the docs and nurses. She slept really well last night and had no fever overnight. This morning she was still a little puffy and swollen. Her rash is still there but much better; looks more like a bruise now and is much smaller. The best part about this all (if there is a good part) was that they turned her feeds off so she was actually interested in some food this morning. Not a lot of food but with a bit of coaxing she had some cheerios, fruit loops, crackers, chips, and a popsicle today. Not our finest nutrition choices but she was finally interested in food so the girl got what she wanted. We also worked a lot on taking things from the syringe today. Nora has always loved taking her medicine prior to surgery and since it has been a battle. Just even seeing a syringe she starts crying and shaking her head saying “No no no!” But once she realized I was giving her water or popsicle juice in the syringe it was the best thing ever. So tonight we are going to try mixing her med with popsicle juice and praying it goes a little better! As far as what happened yesterday, Dr C and the PICU attending still believe it was a reaction to something. Dr. C thought the clot in her vein may be infected and that the plasmapheresis caused that bacteria to spread through her body leading to yesterday’s reaction. Right now all blood cultures, urine culture, and respiratory viral panel have come back negative. She has now reached a therapeutic level of heparin which means she can be taken off the drip (that’s what is keeping us in the ICU). Unfortunately this means she will likely be switching to lovenox which means we have to give her shots in her belly for 6 weeks to 3 months to prevent the clot from getting bigger while her body can break it up. They are still thinking discharge this week but we have a lot of med training to do with the pharmacist and transplant coordinator before. Praying for a restful night and many more good days ahead!
