8-27-24 Happy Day!

Reese was discharged last night 8/26 from the hospital after a remarkably quick recovery of 20 days, according to his Liver Team Doctors. They were impressed by his strength and stamina and his amazing blue eyes and smiles. One of his doctors said coming to check on Reese and seeing him doing so well gave him the encouragement he needed to face his next patient. Those 20 days were filled with hourly ups and downs, constant tweaks in medications after lab draws and several days of heartbreaking withdrawals from pain medication. Watching him struggle with withdrawals was definitely some of the longest days for all. But here we are at our new home away from home in Chicago for the next few weeks as he’ll have weekly labs and Liver Clinic visits. They will be monitoring closely for the first 3-6 months for any signs of rejection. Transitioning from the hospital means that Mom and Dad are now managing all 9 medications by mouth and NG tube, several of them up to 3 times a day. These are all to be given on a fairly strict schedule along with mandatory feedings every 3 hours to ensure weight gain. Giving the medications is very stressful as anyone who has ever tried to get a 7 month old to take medicine by mouth knows.

Ron has had a very positive recovery as well with no complications. Our story has made many a hospital personnel tear up with admiration.

We want to thank everyone for your support, encouragement, and prayers as your strength is holding us together. God has used this journey to show all His great power and has used Reese to encourage others.
