Fever at about 101 today; it was only a matter of time. Have to access his port (for first time) and PICC and culture to check for line infections. Standard precautions. If there are no infections, great- it is due to his counts being down. If there is a line infection, they will treat with the appropriate antibiotic.
Will be on Zosyn now as a broad spectrum antibiotic to address the fever, which is also IV. He may be on and off of this antibiotic depending on whether fevers persist throughout. If cultures show nothing after about 48 hours, it’s very likely he’s in the clear for line infections. Infections can even occur when the line is not accessed (open).
Numbing the site beforehand. I don’t think I’ll be able to watch the next part… feel so bad for him. Needle straight through the site to access and will likely be open for the rest of the inpatient stay. Sort of like a thumb tack looking thing and then tube hangs out from there with a large dressing overtop. It protrudes out from the chest a bit.
Thank you for sharing. Prayers for healing.
Uphill battle, but so many are with you, please know that.
