Best birthday gift ever!

Ok, so it isn’t exactly my birthday, but I did give birth to the birthday boy (David -22), and so I am going to claim this one. Drumroll please ……………….A0B0!  For those of you not familiar with transplants, Erin’s bronchoscopy results came back already from this morning and there is no acute rejection, repeat, no acute rejection! To say we were all a little nervous is an understatement. Erin flew through the first 4 weeks post-transplant pretty much unscathed. After an almost clear chest x-ray last Tuesday, Erin awoke Thursday morning in a tremendous amount of pain and a new x-ray flagged some significant concerns. This led us to a 9-hour ER visit and a hospital admission. A chest tube was placed last Friday, making every movement excruciating. While the tube is smaller than her transplant ones, the location is super sensitive and has brought her to tears on numerous occasions. Erin has always been very in-tune with her body, from low blood sugars to skin sensitivity to just feeling off. Because of this, action was taken almost immediately and the potential roadblock turned into an annoying bump in the road. Cultures came back today from the fluid and showed mycoplasma, a bacterial infection similar to pneumonia. It is very difficult to diagnosis, but they knew her donor had it, and while they treated her for it right after transplant, it appears to have been somewhat resistant to the initial round of therapy. Good news is we can treat this infection with oral antibiotics over the next 4-6 weeks versus needing IV antibiotics and hopefully be discharged from the ‘Badger Hotel’, as the docs like to refer to the hospital as, tomorrow!

  1. Glad to hear you caught the bacterial infection, with Dx, so quickly. Great job Erin.

  2. Hi Karla,

Sorry for the delay…great news with no rejection and great news that the infection was caught so quickly! Hope by now Erin is on the road to recovery and feeling better again. As we both know, when all is going so well, there will be a bump in the road somewhere. While irritating, so happy to hear all is treatable. Prayers continue for healing and recovery. Sending love, hugs and prayers to all of you!
