Day 4 Post-op – Update

It’s unbelievable to say that we are Day 4 post transplant.

Lauryn was moved from the PICU (pediatric intensive care unit) early Monday morning and is now at UNC Children’s Hospital. I’m home tonight with Mike and then headed back up to the hospital early tomorrow for Lauryn’s procedure to remove her hemodialysis line and receive final education with the transplant team of nephrologists, urologists, psychologists, pharmacists and dietitians. I will spend Wednesday night with her and prep her TO COME HOME THURSDAY!

Home, following achievement of some milestones, which not surprisingly, she has been knocking off quickly, including among many- walking, albeit slowly, less than 24 hours after surgery… to now working on climbing stairs and walking laps around the unit!

She is tired, as to be expected with all the IVs, new medications, blood pressure and oxygen checks, fuss around her input and output, the multiple visits from her whole care team …. we are looking forward to recovering over 6 weeks from home!

She is taking multiple anti-rejection, immunosuppressants and anti-viral medications and will be pretty much inside a bubble for 6 weeks, venturing out only to the kidney clinic for labs with a mask on.

But man, she continues to amaze us every single day! Courage, perseverance, and heart.

Mike was discharged on Sunday and is doing so well! He’s emotional about how quickly his, now her kidney has immediately changed all her vitals and has kicked into high gear. Truly life-saving as her quality of life will improve tremendously!

We are not out of the woods yet, as we will have weeks into months of ups and downs as her body responds to all the medications, managing the pain and extreme isolation that she may experience over the next few weeks.

But she’s already got her sights on her comeback and ready for some sense of normal…going back to school, dancing and getting to take a shower (which due to her hemodialysis line, she wasn’t able to for 10 weeks)!

We are so very grateful to our UNC care team. Our family and friends have been amazing. We cannot thank everyone enough.  #teamlaurynm
