It’s been a while since I’ve posted an update on Max, and I wanted to share where things are right now.
A couple of weeks ago at his nephrology appointment, we found out that his iron levels are still low and his body isn’t absorbing oral iron the way it should. As a result, he’s become pretty anemic and was referred to a hematologist.
We had that consultation today, and I have to say we really loved her. She was incredibly kind, thorough, and took the time to explain everything in a way that made us feel informed and comfortable.
The plan is for Max to have an iron infusion next Wednesday. She expects that this should be the only one he’ll need, with follow up visits afterward to make sure everything is improving as it should. Aside from possibly feeling a little tired or queasy the day of, there shouldn’t be any major issues.
He’s been so exhausted lately, and we’re really hopeful this will help bring some of his energy back. They did mention it could take a couple of weeks before we start to notice a difference.
This is the first time in 16 years that this condition has really started to show itself again. For a long time other than watching his diet and avoiding certain foods he can’t have it was something we could tuck away in the back of our minds and not think about constantly. Now it’s starting to feel very real again—especially as his transplant in the next few months is becoming a reality.
Through all of this, Max has been such a trooper. He handles everything with a strength that amazes me and rarely complains, even on the hard days.
We truly appreciate your continued support, prayers, and encouragement it means so much to our family.
