September 8 Update

Today was a very challenging day for Peri and for us. Last night, Peri became very agitated and experienced cardiac arrest. Due to this, her team of doctors decided that she needed a repeat of the cath lab procedure she had about a month ago. This was a balloon septostomy, wherein they enlarged her atrial septum to allow the pressures in each of her atria to decrease, as well as to decrease the pressure in her lungs. We spent most of the day trying our best to keep Peri calm and comfortable and got lots of snuggles in with her until it was time for her to be taken for her procedure. The procedure was started around 5 pm and they finished atabout 7. The doctor said that the procedure itself went well and that thus far, the pressures have all decreased. Unfortunately, we will have to wait and see how the next 24-48 hours go to see how Peri settles to see whether the procedure was truly successful. Depending on how things go over the next two days, they may need to perform an open-heart surgery in order to place bands on her pulmonary arteries to limit the blood flow from her heart to her lungs. We are hoping that this will not be necessary, of course. It was a scary day to say the least, and we know the next day or so will likely be difficult.
