Our Story

Wesley Frederick Melville was born December 6, 2017. To us, he was perfect, but soon after birth doctors knew something was wrong. At three weeks old he was diagnosed with a rare liver disease called Biliary Atresia. His liver had improper drainage and would likely fail and require transplantation. He underwent a major surgery called a “Kasai procedure” at three weeks. Surgeons removed his malformed gall bladder, cut into the bottom of his liver and attached his bile ducts to his small intestine to create drainage in the rare hope that it might save his liver.

Unfortunately, we got the news while Wesley was a tender three months that the surgery was unsuccessful and he would require transplantation. With his health waning, we were admitted to CHOA at Egleston on Sunday, April 15. He was listed for transplant on April 23. His mother, Liz, was able to donate a portion of her liver to her son on May 10. Wesley was discharged from the hospital on June 1 and continues to grow stronger daily. We are grateful the Lord has brought us so far.

The Children’s Organ Transplant Association (COTA) helps children and young adults who need a life-saving transplant by providing fundraising assistance and family support. COTA is the nation’s only fundraising organization solely dedicated to raising life-saving dollars in honor of transplant-needy children and young adults. 100% of each contribution made to COTA in honor of our patients helps meet transplant-related expenses. COTA’s services are free to our families, and gifts to COTA are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law.
