Threw in the towel, Antibiotics it is

Hey all!  It’s been a little while since I have updated.  I have not been feeling well for a few weeks.  I have been coughing more, especially at night.  I went for lung functions and to give a sputum sample today.  My lung function is down just a tad.  My FEV1 was .95L/33%, down from 35%.  That’s the amount of air that I can push out in the first second after taking in a big deep breath.  Which basically means I’m using 33% of my lung capacity.

Just got a call from my nurse and we are going to try oral antibiotics first.  Hoping it will knock this thing down a bit.  I will be on Cipro (750mg) twice a day and Bactrim (800/160mg, 2 pills) twice a day for 14 days, along with Prednisone (20mg) for 5 days.  Oral antibiotics don’t usually do much for me because my bugs aren’t sensitive to much or I’m allergic to what would work.  Since its been awhile since I have been on oral antibiotics I’m hoping they do something.  If I’m not better soon I will be switching to IV antibiotics.  I tried to hold out as long as I could but coughing is annoying, not too mention very draining.  I had a decent summer CF wise and was able to enjoy some days at the pool.  If you know me, you know that I love me some sunshine.  It helps with my mood.  I try to soak up as much vitamin D as possible.

My depression and anxiety have been worse for a few months.  We just upped my Effexor hoping it will help.  Nothing so far but it’s only been a week.  I’ve not had much motivation and been sleeping more hence the depression being worse lately.  I keep trying to push myself as best I can.  Depression and anxiety suck big time!!!  I’ll update later to let you know if the oral antibiotics helped or if I will be starting IVs.

Until next time…

  1. Shannon, you are and have always been a special, young lady. I think you are a wonderful inspiration to more people than you can even imagine. I believe that bouts of depression are part of the normal process of dealing with the battle you are fighting. Beyond a doubt, you will win the battle! Take care and God bless you!
