Our Story
In July 2025, at just two weeks old, Beau was diagnosed with Biliary Atresia, a rare and life-threatening pediatric liver disease in which bile flow from the liver is blocked, causing progressive liver damage.
Beau underwent the Kasai procedure, a surgery intended to restore bile flow. While the surgery itself went smoothly and bile flow was initially re-established, Beau soon faced additional challenges. He struggled to gain weight, requiring specialized formula and a feeding tube (NG tube), and he developed multiple infections that led to repeated hospitalizations.
Over the following months, Beau’s Kasai procedure began to fail. As a result, Beau now needs a life-saving liver transplant.
Beau has been in and out of the hospital frequently. Any time he develops a fever, Matthew and Haley must immediately drop everything and rush him to the hospital, where he undergoes extensive testing to rule out serious infections. Sadly, this is expected to continue until Beau receives his transplant.
After the transplant, Beau is expected to remain hospitalized for at least a month. Following discharge, the family may need to stay in a hotel near the hospital for several additional weeks so Beau can remain close to his medical team. This journey places an immense emotional and financial burden on Matthew, Haley, and Beau’s older brother, Mason (age 2).
The family will need ongoing support from friends, family, and their community as they navigate a lifetime of transplant-related care.
Please consider donating to COTA in honor of Beau’s journey. Your generosity will allow COTA to help cover the many transplant-related expenses Beau will face now and in the future. Every donation to COTA for Beau’s Journey —no matter the size—is deeply appreciated and makes a meaningful difference.
The Children’s Organ Transplant Association (COTA) helps children and young adults who need a life-saving transplant by providing fundraising assistance and family support. COTA is the nation’s only fundraising organization solely dedicated to raising life-saving dollars in honor of transplant-needy children and young adults. 100% of each contribution made to COTA in honor of our patients helps meet transplant-related expenses. COTA’s services are free to our families, and gifts to COTA are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law.
