First, the living donor program at the University of Utah stopped all living donor work ups. Without a known date of when things were going to resume. A week later primary’s called us and said transplants were on hold until further notice. We were devastated, infuriated, confused; every emotion.
Things started reopening the beginning of May. May 15th my dad was able to start the process of testing to donate his kidney. They told my mom no one needs B+ kidneys so she didn’t need to test. We found out June 10th that my dad’s kidney has weird anatomy, and that he wasn’t able to donate to me.
Again. Devastated.
July 8th, my dad got an email from the living donor coordinator, saying they have a donor who is able to donate July 23rd and I would get their kidney.
We started our quarantine July 11th, my dad donated his kidney July 21st, and I received my kidney July 23rd of 2020.
I spent two days in the PICU, and five on the ICS unit before I was able to discharge home!!
