This admission has been really rough/ scary/emotional/draining/and we are ready to be back home. Hopefully we get to go home in the next several days.
Elliana had to be re-admitted for nausea/vomiting/abdominal pain and diarrhea. Ruled out viral/bacterial. She had an upper and lower scope that showed possible TMA. She developed all over body swelling with a lot of fluid in her lungs and abdomen.
She had to receive 1 unit of blood and 9 units of platelets. Thank you to all of the individuals that donate blood and platelets to save life’s.
We started treatment for TMA. Right now it seems to be working. Two days with no platelets needed and swelling has improved.
TMA: is a side effect of chemo meds and immunosuppressive meds. It causes damage in the blood vessels. The body tries to heal the vessels by laying down compliment. Compliment can be very sticky and trap/injury platelets and red blood cells. It can also cause the vessels to leak fluid into other parts of the body. The medication to treat TMA is IV and has to be given every 72 hours. So far she has gotten two doses with the next on Monday.
She had perked up over the last 48 hours. She made slime. Worked with OT on a science kit to make glow worms.
The art therapist (that she worked with weekly on our transplant admission) came by and they worked on an art project. The art therapist has selected Elliana’s painting to be entered into an art show in Sept. The art work is auctioned off at a benefit for the Friends of Kids with Cancer fund that supports programs/toys/supplies/activities for kids in the hospital. We have been very greatful for the program. They have dropped off craft supplies, coloring books, games for her to play with during her admissions. She is very excited!
She loved seeing all of her friends in there Elliana Strong shirts! It was great to see a smile on her face looking at the pictures.
