Today was a good day. Evelyn had a visit from our friend Alyssa, we played UNO, painted, colored, and danced. Then Evelyn asked me to dye her hair purple. I caved and allowed it… but only a little bit. Seeing her smile ear to ear made every second worth it. At this point, anything to make her smile is worth it, knowing the days ahead are going to be tough for a bit.
After dying her hair, she wanted to show it off around the unit, so we made our rounds. We stopped by the desk where her cardiologist was sitting. He noticed her purple hair right away and asked if he could go on a walk with her while she rode around on the wiggle car. They raced around the unit and even played a little tag. Watching that moment made me smile so much.

Tomorrow is our last full day without chest tubes, and I honestly don’t know how to process that. Surgery is scheduled for 7A.M. on Friday. This will become our new normal until transplant. Twenty-four hours a day, someone will be in the room checking her pumps, making sure they don’t clot, making sure no air gets in, and ensuring she remains stable. It’s going to be a huge adjustment for all of us.
For now, mom and dad are going to soak up every bit of quality time we can with Evelyn.
