“If it had not been the LORD who was on our side”: Week 3

Psalm 124:1–3

If it had not been the LORD who was on our side— let Israel now say— if it had not been the LORD who was on our side when people rose up against us, then they would have swallowed us up alive, when their anger was kindled against us;

During hospital stays, Leslee and I often talk about how difficult it must be for unbelievers to raise and care for medically needy children. We certainly get the sentiment from the Psalmist. Apart from the Lord being on our side all these years, I believe fear, anxiety, anger, despair, hopelesness, and other similar feelings would’ve swallowed us alive. Yet, we stand today as recipients of His goodness, grace, and love. As a matter of fact, if I’m going to be completely honest with you, sometimes I feel like we might burst if He sends us another blessing your way.

Ela’s care here at the hospital has been phenomenal. That is something that, truly, brings some relief to my heart every time I leave my girls and return to Martinsburg. On my end of things, things have also been very encouraging. IBC has been such a blessing. People have been caring and flexible, often offering rides or meals or child care for the boys and assuring me of their constant prayers for Ela and our family. Recently, Ela has been the VBS highlight at a couple of different churches and she has received cards, toys, stuffed animals, prayer shawls, immune system boosters, and even personalized hospital gowns! (she’s definitely the most fashionable patient on the floor!).

As far as Ela’s health is concerned, there isn’t much to say. Leslee’s observations are that Ela is more active and looks better physically. We are thankful for this, since it probably means that her continual infusion of milrinone is helping her. She is also eating more and gaining weight which is good for heart offers and for recovery after surgery. About a week ago we found out that the doctors turned down a heart that was designated for Ela. This is the second time this has happened. There is certainly a temptation to give into fear, anxiety, and anger yet today we remember that the LORD is on our side, and we are thankful to know you are too.

Thank You for Praying for Me and My Heart!

  1. Thanks for the great update!! Our prayers rise daily and often as you wait on the Lord. It is so good to hear of all the ways the Lord is providing on so many levels. Ela looks so good. I especially notice her eyes! A remarkable difference in the coloring under her eyes! The variety of activities and toys being provided is astonishing as well. We’ll continue to pray that every need is supplied both physical, emotional and spiritual.

  2. For the last 2 days I’ve been tempted to call you but know you are likely on the phone A LOT! Besides all the obvious, I’ve been praying that the Lord would give you opportunities to both BE a witness as well as SHARE your HOPE. It is always so encouraging when you know the Lord is using you in the lives of others where he has placed you. I know your light is always shining in your sweet spirit but still asking that someone asks about the HOPE that is within you. I awake praying for you nearly every morning. Love, Love, Love……

  3. Thanks for the great update. We will keep her and the family in prayer. Love the pictures too.
