October 2026

October has reminded us how God continues to care for us everyday. We were blessed to spend time together at Wildlife Prairie Park, staying at Megan’s Lodge. Being surrounded by nature and quiet reminders of fellow heart families was amazing.

Jake recently had labs with his liver team that showed his body is staying strong, his kidneys are handling the workload, his viral markers are calm and his new liver is functioning just as it was meant to. His anti-rejection levels, Tacro specifically, were running higher than they wanted. Tacro is essential for keeping the immune system at bay, but managing it is a balancing act. There is a narrow window and dialing in the right dose is a moving target. Because his beautiful, healthy new liver processes this medication, normal changes, like growth spurts, digestion, and hydration, can change the levels in his body. But we are thankful for Jake’s transplant team. Their expertise, fast reactions and precision keep him safe and healthy. After a few dose changes, we got word today that his levels are back in range. We thank God for the vigilant people who watch over these small details before they can become big issues. We are also grateful for the amazing staff at OSF’s main house outpatient lab for their skill and compassion. Jake is not an easy draw but they get it the first time, every time and connect with him on a personal level which makes him much more comforatable.

Alongside the physical recovery is the emotional side of transplant. Lately, Jake has been putting in the work here to. At 18, processing what it means to be alive because of someone’s heartbreak is a heavy reality. He has so much gratitude, but it is intertwined within his biggest trauma. We see God working in Jake’s heart through this too. We are giving him all the love, time, grace and supports he needs to tell his story.

We know God often takes our hardest seasons and uses them for good so we joined the nationwide “Life Rocks” movement. We placed hand-painted stones for neighbors, delivery drivers, and friends to take, photograph, or re-hide in the world. Bordering them sit bricks honoring Jacob, his donor and organ donation. It’s a daily testament that out of darkness, God can bring new life.

To bring a joyful close to our month, Grandpa came for a visit too!! Every stable day, every good lab result, every painted stone reminds us how fragile stability is and keeps us grounded in prayer and gratitude. Thank you to our church, family, friends and village who pray for Jake. We are so grateful for you!
