Waiting

💚 One of the hardest parts of transplant is something you can’t see in a picture:The waiting.

You wait for labs.

You wait for appointments.

You wait for numbers to change.

You wait to see whether medications work.

You wait for weight gain.

You wait for phone calls.

And once your child is listed for transplant, somewhere in the back of your mind, you are always waiting for THE phone call. The one that says there may be a liver.

For Jaime’s family, that phone call represents hope for a healthier future. But transplant is complicated, because although Jaime may have a live donor, one family’s miracle may also come during another family’s unimaginable grief. That is something we will never lose sight of.

So during Liver Awareness Month, we honor not only the people waiting for transplants, but also the organ donors and donor families who make second chances possible.
