Lukey’s 2nd Birthday!!

First, an update from 1/13 I shared on Lucas’ facebook page (COTA for Lucas Fadenrecht):

Update: Lucas’ medical team is very happy with his progress! He ripped out his feeding tube last night and he’s now off oxygen as well. He ate a normal breakfast and got the go ahead to eat a normal diet from here on out. They said that if things continue as they have, Lukey can move from the ICU to the floor on Friday (his 2nd birthday)! His transplant surgeon stopped by a few minutes ago and he described the echo from yesterday as “fantastic”! He was very pleased with how Lukey was doing! Lukey is so strong and resilient and we’re so proud of him!!!

Today, Friday 1/15 is Lucas 2nd birthday, and what a day it is! What a gift he’s been given!  Our gratitude is endless today. Lucas is recovering wonderfully. His trajectory has put him in a position to move from the ICU back to our familiar surgical floor (shout out RC6 team!) We’re set to move this evening.

It’s been fascinating to see Lucas’ surgical recovery develop so quickly, especially after our early scare. Kids are incredibly resilient. Today is the most he’s seemed like himself. His cute silly personality, rolling around in his crib. Corey’s made it extra special for him with all kinds of farm animal themed decorations. I met Corey to swap this morning and she was wearing a cow print shirt and a cow headband. Lucas loved it! I had a sheep one on, and he was yelling “sheep! sheep!”.

They’ve continued to peel back support medications & equiptment. At this point most of his meds are oral, and for the first time since he was 9mo old he doesn’t have any tubing continuously attached to him. The medication he’s been on for over a year, Milrinone, was stopped yesterday.

The team is continuously monitoring Lucas’ lab work ups to adjust the immunosupression and ensure organ rejection is at bay. So far, all has been going well.

Once Lucas is on the floor, Corey and I will begin rigorous education over the next week in order to prepare for discharge.  If all goes really well, we may even be discharged to our apartment next weekend.

Thank you all for your continued prayers, love and support for this sweet boy. Please join us in wishing him a HAPPY 2nd BIRTHDAY!!!
