Leading Up to Transplant

Megan continued showing signs that her illness was progressing.  Even though the country was on lockdown due to COVID-19, the Doctors felt it was best to get Megan in for a thorough transplant evaluation.  Since we have always believed it was best to prepare for the worst when there was little emotion and while she was stable instead of during an emergent situation with high emotion, we scheduled our transplant evaluation with St. Louis Children’s Hospital during the second week of June.  It was determined that Megan’s natural MELD score was very low, but with all the symptoms she had experienced that they would petition the governing board to add exception points to move her up on the transplant list.  We were told that it was unlikely that we would get a call until Fall, and sometimes you have to wait years.  Fast forward two weeks to July 1, 2020, when we got “the” call late in the evening and drove three and a half hours to St. Louis in the middle of the night.  However, after two days in the hospital, it was determined that the liver was not a match and we were sent home.  This was an excruciating roller coaster ride of emotions, to say the least.
