First Day of Junior Year

Today was my first day as a Junior in High School and it has only been 5 weeks since my transplant . . . . . But let’s go back to the beginning to see where I started.  On July 3rd 2018, my Mom took me in for a routine checkup before I started High School and that is when my Pediatrician discovered that my spleen was much larger than it should be.  Dr. Caffey sent us to the Lab to have my blood drawn.  At that time, I was terrified of needles so I wasn’t excited with the news.  The Lab took 9 vials of blood.  They sent us home and told my Mom to wait for a call.  We went home and while I went shopping for fireworks with my Dad, my Mom picked up groceries for our cookout with family and friends for the 4th.  However, about 7:30 that night my Mom got the call that the results from my tests were not good and that we would have to meet with an Oncologist and Gastroenterologist on the 5th.  We tried our best to enjoy our holiday, but I could tell my parents were stressed.

On July 5th, 2018 we started two full days of tests and more blood draws.  There were almost 30 vials of blood taken between the 3rd and 6th of July for testing.  We found out on Saturday that I was going to be admitted to the hospital for a liver biopsy to see if we could figure out what was going on with me.  What we didn’t understand is how there could be something wrong with me since I hadn’t had any pain or symptoms that would make me think I was sick. – Megan
