I stayed the night in the PICU with My. The nurses and doctors are so good at keeping the room quiet even though there is non stop tests and monitoring throughout the night. I overheard the blood sugars through much of the night and they were right on target.
Doctors just came by and did their rounds. Christie was here too! That wild woman said she was already in at 6am putting My’s CGM (continuous glucose monitor) on. When does she sleep?! The doctors confirmed blood sugars have almost all been right on target. This is great because bouncing blood sugars all over the place can be something that happens right after surgery. This also means they can stay on the one dose of insulin they are currently on, and they don’t have to keep adjusting it to get it right. My is having some low blood pressure. They are about to start some medication for that, but said it is normal for such a large surgery like My just underwent.
Skin team just left. They said everything looks good. They are just going to start having My turn every two ours onto their side to take some pressure off the tailbone.
Physical therapy should be by in the next few hours and they want to get My out of bed and into the reclining chair to get their body up and moving. We were really surprised they were ready to try this already, but also grateful. We know moving sooner can help strength and healing.
My is super super sleepy. We’ve talked to them a bit. They asked me for Bananas and Guy (their lovies they have had since they were only like 2 or 4 months old). Luckily I had thought about that last night and put them in my bag after I went to the Ronald McDonald House. My was disappointed they couldn’t have one on each side of their face (due to the port in the vein in the neck) lol. I was like they will just have to snuggle you from the same side today. My has a sore throat (from the tube down their throat yesterday)and has requested water, but won’t be able to drink for another day or two.
It’s been so relieving to see them look so good! The first thing the twins and I noticed, even last night, was that My has more color to their skin! They have been so sickly paper white for so long, it was noticeable right away.
Our hope for today is that they get lots of rest. Doctors said if we keep their pain under control today that will help with days 2 and 3, which are usually the worst.
