From Mom: Today is an incredible day for us as Cassidy turns 18! 

Every year on her birthday, I reflect on the day she was born and it brings a lot of emotions to the surface. I can’t help but feel a faint sense of sadness over all that is… and isn’t. But reflection also brings great joy as I see how much she has conquered. It is a bit of roller coaster. I remember the day she was born like it was yesterday. We had to wait six hours to even lay eyes on her, then they whisked her off to another hospital. I did not get to hold her for two days as I was recovering from a C-section a few miles away. I remember worrying that we wouldn’t bond. Those first moments when a child is born is so important and that was taken from us so that she could be treated. But just as God can restore what is broken, He gave us that bond that I longed for. Cassidy makes those around her feel loved and important. She makes people smile. And when she hugs you, it feels like a glimpse of heaven that fills your soul because there is just something special about her touch.

The other day we were at her pediatrician’s office and the doctor asked Cassidy, “how is your new kidney, and how is your dad doing?” Cassidy looked at me and signed “I am over this story, and ready to move on”. Oh, my darling… her sass is too much! My response to her was, “baby girl… your story is never done, and we will never stop talking about it! It is beautiful, full of miracles, and perseverance. Happy Birthday sweet girl. Your story is just beginning…
