Health Update 2

Stetson’s liver enzymes have been steadily decreasing with the administration of Thymoglobulin, a treatment that notably diminishes the risk of acute rejection in right lobe living donor liver transplant patients. The treatment may be given over the course of either 3 or 5 days. Stetson received the 5-day regimen. Unfortunately, the last day of treatment his numbers increased , prompting his medical team to consider high-dose steroid therapy twice daily as the next step in his care. In addition, I requested an EEG and MRI on Wednesday morning to assess Stetson’s brain activity and compare any potential damage from last year. The 24-hour EEG yielded normal results, with no seizure-like activity detected. On Friday the 23rd, Stetson was scheduled to undergo a liver biopsy, but his improving numbers led to the cancellation of the procedure. Instead, he received an MRI with and without contrast to compare any damage from last year, which yielded normal results. This is great news for Stetson’s progress. His medical team is currently monitoring his numbers and considering a liver biopsy on Monday. Additionally, I plan to request either a broviac or port for Stetson, which will facilitate any future medical procedures and spare him the need for repeated poking or sedation for another pic line.

On Monday, I convened with the team, and they advised against inserting a port or broviac due to infection risk, particularly given Stetson’s recent transplant and fragile recovery state. We opted for a liver biopsy to address liver enzyme levels that failed to decrease. Although the procedure was successful, results indicated antibody rejection, necessitating additional steroid treatment administered once daily every three days. While we do not anticipate significant liver enzyme reduction, we recognize the prolonged recovery period associated with this type of rejection. We express sincere gratitude for the ongoing support and prayers throughout this challenging process.
