Our Next Challenge

As I prepare this update post it is December 12; this is the one year anniversary since Mesa was first diagnosed with AML. It’s hard to believe we’ve been going at this for a year already!

Mesa just completed her fifth of six outpatient chemos and her second of three donor lymphocyte infusions. She will have her last round of chemo and donor lymphocyte infusion in January. She will also have her next bone marrow aspiration in January.  Mesa‘s weight briefly leveled out, but then she lost another pound this week.  The doctors have started her on an appetite stimulant to see if it will help her gain weight; however, one of the problems is that her stomach has shrunk so much from having limited intake for so long that she struggles to eat very much in a single sitting.

Today we are meeting with her school student council to discuss them hopefully doing a 5K run for COTA to raise money since the medical bills will be skyrocketing again in January when our deductible resets. This means that in addition to the thousand dollars per month we pay for insurance we will also be paying $6000 out of pocket before we get good coverage again.  It’s pretty scary to think about how much we will have to pay for her chemo, donor lymphocyte infusion, and her bone marrow aspiration in January and all those upcoming check-ups and additional bone marrow aspirations. We hope that her school can make this work so COTA can help ease the stress and burden of these upcoming expenses.

As always, Thank you for your support and prayers.
