February Update

It has been a little while since we have updated. Westons heart procedure January 2nd went amazingly well. A pre-operative echo was done to evaluate the PFO. The cardiologist, Dr Peterson and ultrasound tech were pretty positive they were able to see blood flow through the PFO. Weston went to surgery and it was just a short time later Dr Peterson came out to talk with David and I in the waiting room. Dr Peterson was unable to locate the PFO once he was in there. He even did extra testing to be positive. The PFO had closed on it’s own! This was great news for a couple reasons. Since there is no closure device, Weston does not have to be on anti-coagulation medicaiton for 6 months as we previously thought he would have to be. This is huge because with BA blood clotting can be an issue and anti-coagulate medications can increase the risk of bleeding. Secondly, there is no time constraint on when transplant could be done if Weston were to suddenly become sicker. If there was a device the recommended time frame before transplant would be 4-6 months.

Weston was scheduled fro another upper GI to evaluate his esophageal varices again on January 16th. This procedure was moved to February 13th to allow some time between anesthesia. This procedure has been pushed out again because Weston was diagnosed with RSV on January 28th. We were able to control this at home for the most part but on january 31st his fever spiked again, so a chest x-ray was done and Weston had pneumonia. He started antibiotics and seemed to be doing better. He went to daycare the following Monday and then Tuesday February 4th his fever spiked once again. Since Weston had been improving and was on antibiotics for the pneumonia, his liver team decided it was best for him to be admitted at Cardinal Glennon for evaluation and rule out worsing liver disease as the cause of the fever. Weston was admitted from February 4th-6th. It was determined while he was there that he had contracted a second virus called coronavirus (not the current scare from china coronavirus but the common coronavirus that has been around for some time). Weston’s liver labs did elevate slightly but this is expected with any illness. So as of now his upper GI is scheduled March 26th. Anesthesia prefers to wait 6 weeks after a respiratory illness before the patient can have general anesthesia again. I am glad they are proactive with this.

Weston is finally acting like his silly little self again after 2.5 weeks of being sick from the 2 viruses. Not only is it scary when Weston has an illness because it is hard on his system and can cause him to go into complete liver failure, it takes his little body longer to fight off the illness due to a weak immune system. So remember to wash your hands often and avoid public areas if you are sick. You never know who you are exposing to your illnesses.

God Bless you all. Thank You for the  support you give our family
