June 11th: POD

Emmy had another night of pretty intense pain. The pain team made a few adjustments to her medication dosing and timing and today here pain has been better controlled. Her pain was well enough controlled that they allowed her to transfer from ICU to the endocrine floor where we will stay for the remainder of her inpatient time. We are now in room A503.

With that move come a few changes. Her first insulin pump was placed today (she’s been on IV insulin up to this point). She did great and didn’t even flinch when they inserted it.

She’s now off all of her IV pumps! She still has her central line and peripheral IV for access and meds. These will stay in until closer to discharge.

We will start the Hydroxyurea tonight. This is a medication typically used during chemotherapy. Since Emmy’s spleen was removed, her platelet count will increase. The Hydroxyurea will help to lower this. This med also makes the Dexacom inaccurate, so Emmy will continue to be poked for blood sugar readings until she comes off the Hydroxyurea. This is all common and a normal part of the TPIAT post-op treatment.

Avery continues to have a blast at her nursing camp. Today she got to tour the hospital and have a diabetes lesson where she helped teach the other students how to do blood sugar checks.

Our fingers are crossed for a restful night with less interruptions for Emmy.
